Some background history on subliminal messaging/advertising, once again coming from Kar Meng's comments! haha..
A long long time ago, subliminal advertising isn't what it is today. Instead of putting coke bottles and Marlboro cigarettes into the movies, subliminal advertising, when it first came out, was actually a lot more dangerous!
Take for example this picture:
How many times have you been subliminally aroused in the last 10 minutes?
For moving pictures, subliminal messaging wa even more powerful. In the past, they used to splice in messages like (eat XXX, it's the best!, or sexually connotative images) into movies. Now these messages flashed across the screen super fast, many many times, over and over. It was so fast that your eyes wouldn't catch it, but your brain can! So you're literally exposed to the message a hundred times over in the course of watching your movie!
I managed to find this youtube video, not that great footage, but explains exactly what i mean!
On a side note though, subliminal advertising (especially in movies) has been banned. Of course, it still is occasionally used (even for political reasons), but it's illegal. So now, we have to subject ourselves to movies where people open up mac books and sip a can of coke and sms on Sony Ericsson phones in the middle of the movie. :P
On a more lighthearted note, i stumbled across yet another super funny ad!
And look!! a good ad by internet explorer! Wonder why we haven't seen it.. Or maybe it's just me? haha..
That's all for now folks! More when i see it! :D

WoW woW wow! The first picture speaks a lot! hahaa
ReplyDeleteNoticed that subliminal advertising is very actively used in Western countries, and less so for Asian.
Is it really cultural issues? Or is it simply because there are no creative juices?
*just a follow-up on your comments on subliminal advertising, i mentioned subliminal advertising brought through game-play processes in my latest post. =)
I think subliminal advertising is going to be more prevailing because they (advertises) know we(consumers) are already immuned with all the pervading ads they put up. In today's context, people are smart enough to identify marketing messages and their hidden agenda.
ReplyDeleteSo I think advertisers will take a turn with screwing with our subconsciousness instead and I seriously think it's going to be successful. So many times macdonalds ads on buses make me hungry :P
why didn't i think of using subliminal messaging in our presentation slides!!!
ReplyDeleteha but anyway i think i'm either tired or slow as I didn't notice whats so interesting about the first pic until I looked harder to find out what its subliminal msg was. lol
But no matter what IE puts in their ads, their browsers still suck!!!
haha! no, the old subliminal messaging (where the picture is flashed rapidly during a movie/video) is banned in many asian countries, precisely cos they feel that screwing with our subconsciousness means a lack of human rights! (e.g. i subconsciously get psycho-ed to buy a burger, so i lose the right to properly decide that i want a steak instead haha)
ReplyDeleteThoughtsbook, who are you?!?! :S:S:S haha..Macdonald ads on buses are direct marketing, not subliminal! :P But food adverts always make me hungry.. they don't need to be subliminal man! hahaha..
Meng!!! Your carrot experiment didn't work! And i'm sure i don't have a greater control of my mind!! hahaha..

I find sublimal advertising just plain weird haha. I believe the current methods being used in movies and games where the brand names and products are part of the background / being used by the characters much more effective!
ReplyDeleteFor example, think Transformers! You remember the cars and... YOU DEFINITELY CANNOT FORGET EBAY!! hahhaha.
